Jan Collins talking Maine bats

MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society will meet Monday, Oct. 17, at the Calvin Lyons Hall behind the Town Office.

The evening will begin with a potluck supper at 5 p.m. followed by a presentation by guest speaker Jan Collins, a 25-year veteran high school science teacher. She is  a former interpretive specialist for the Maine Appalachian Mountain Club, co-author of “Forty Nature Walks in Southern Maine,” and recent graduate of the Maine Master Naturalist program.

Her talk, “Maine Bats – On the Path to Extinction?” was her capstone project for the Maine Master Naturalist program.

She is a native of Maine and lives with her husband, Irving Faunce, on their blueberry farm in Wilton.

The life history of bats, myths and threats to their continued existence will be discussed. 

New members are welcome. The meeting and presentation are open to the public. 

Arts and Crafts Assoc. meeting

FARMINGTON — The second fall meeting of the Franklin County Arts and Crafts Association will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the University of Maine at Farmington North Dining Hall.

The session begins at 6:30 p.m. with registration for FCACA’s annual Christmas crafts fair, followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m.

The fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in the UMF Olsen Student Center.

Gold LEAF fall term kicks off Oct. 19

FARMINGTON — The Gold LEAF Institute Senior College at the University of Maine at Farmington invites the public to its fall/winter term kickoff on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the UMF Olsen Student Center, North Dining Hall, 111 South St.

The institute is open to those 50 and older interested in lifelong learning.

The program will run from 3 to 4 p.m., and course registrations will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

McLaughlin Gardens seeks Pumpkin Carvers 

PARIS — Pumpkin carvers of all ages are invited to the McLaughlin home to carve on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 19 and 20.

This year’s themes are dinosaurs and emojis.

Carvers will contribute to the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, set for Oct. 21 and 22.

Pizza Night in Rumford

RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society will hold a pizza night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Town Hall auditorium via the River Street entrance.

Following the pizza snack, longtime member Ed Roach will present History of the Rumford American Legion. The Legion hall is a prominent building on Congress Street, but the Legion was not always at that location. This is the community’s opportunity to learn about its growth and development over the years and its dedication to veterans of all wars.

Ski museum rep to address Historical Society

PARIS — Scott Andrews of the Ski Museum of Maine in Kingfield will present a program on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Paris Cape Historical Society, 77 High St.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a brief business meeting.

The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served after the program.

Storytelling Guild to meet

FARMINGTON — The Storytelling Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Farmington Public Library, 117 Academy St.
