1927 – 2016

LEWISTON — Horace J. Atwood, 89, of Sabattus passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, in Lewiston.

He was born April 3, 1927, to Byron and Rosa Atwood.

He married Madelyn Brewer on Oct. 26, 1946, and they had two sons, Dennis and Steve. Horace worked on the farm for years and then worked 18 years for the Sabattus School Department. He also drove a bus for Western Maine Transportation. He was a member of the Sabattus Board of Selectmen for 16 years, during which time he helped have a water and sewer system put in the town.

Horace enjoyed camping, woodworking and liked to play cribbage. He started the Sabattus Mountaineers Snowmobile Club in 1970. He gave the land that is now used as the Sabattus Recreational Ball Field to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

He became a member of the Webster Masonic Lodge No. 164 in 1949 and was a past master. He was also a member of the Lakeside Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Sabattus Community Free Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Dennis and wife, Karen, Steve and wife, Debbie; grandsons, Stephen Atwood and wife, Sue, Kris Nadeau; granddaughter, Alyson Parent and husband, Chad; and great-granddaughters, Haley, Abby and Madelyn.
