DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Livermore Falls Women’s Club Fall Craft EXTRAvaganza at the Livermore Community Building is this Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., not the 25th. This is a correction to the article printed in Tuesday’s Sun Spots. — Celia Holmes, LFWC fundraising chairwoman

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My mother ran out of Creslan deluxe acrylic Natura Quality Yarn in “pure fisherman” while trying to complete a beautiful fisherman knit sweater for a raffle item at her assisted living center. I contacted the manufacturer on the label to find it no longer in business. Any thoughts on how to find specific discontinued yarn? She would be thrilled and greatly appreciative. I would love to surprise her with a miraculous find! — Lee, no town.

ANSWER: Creslan is an acrylic fiber brand that is now known as Sterling Fiber but unfortunately they no longer produce yarn. It is possible to find discontinued yarn on the internet, especially eBay. Many people with leftover or “vintage” yarn will put unused skeins up for sale. After some extensive searching, nothing came up for your specific yarn. It seems that a little more information would be helpful. Websites like that update fairly often with new items so it may be worth keeping an eye on, but there is no way to know how long it will take to land your exact brand and color of yarn.

It may be quickest and easiest to find a good substitute. To do this, more information is needed. The weight or yardage, the yarn name and all of the color information is usually necessary. There are websites that can take this information and offer alternatives that you can find in stores, try yarnsub.com, but it may be best to enlist the help of a professional. You might try Quilt Essentials in Auburn. They are at 909 Minot Ave. and offer yarn and knitting supplies as well as instructional classes. Bring in the label and a sample to find the closest match. They open at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and can be reached by calling (207) 784-4486.

If by any chance a reader has this yarn or knows where to find it, please write in to Sun Spots.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: With the falling leaves comes the arrival of the holiday season. Would all of the readers of Sun Spots mark their calendars for the annual Salvation Army local toy drive? It is hosted by the local Rambunctious Red Hatters. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Auburn Mall on Nov. 18 from the hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Toys will be distributed by the Salvation Army to less privileged children to help them have a more memorable Christmas. Please show support for a great holiday cause. Thank you. — No name, no town.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Andover Parent Teacher group is putting on its 2nd Annual Craft and Vendor fair on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Because of the overwhelming interest, we will be holding the event at the Andover Town Hall. Crafters and vendors are needed; please contact Amber Cooper if you are interested in reserving a space at the Andover Town Hall by calling (207) 357-2647. This is a village-wide event. The Andover Congregational Church will also be holding its annual fair across from the Andover Town Hall. Come and enjoy the spirit in the village! — Amber, Andover.
