The citizens of Maine have made a choice to submit citizens initiatives because of the lack of action on the part of the Legislature and governor. Minimum wage, gun background checks and school funding have all been before the Legislature and have not been acted upon.
Elected officials who do not like the wording of the referendum questions should have done their work in the first place.
If the initiatives are imperfect, it is another reason to ask elected officials why they did not do their jobs.
To have public safety organizations on both sides of an issue is a prime example of governmental dysfunction. To have the county sheriffs supporting a “no” vote on Question 3, while being funded by the NRA and then complaining about out-of-state money is just absurd.
If government of the people does not do the work for the people, sometimes the people end up doing the work.
