LEWISTON — The Maine table tennis league of Lewiston has now been chosen to hold the annual table tennis state championship. The event is called the Arthur Lekousi Maine State Championship. It is named after a longtime state champion and retired French and German teacher at Portland High School. Still playing at 89, Lekousi is an inspiration to the roughly 200 serious players in Maine.

The Maine State Championship, a yearly event has been held almost every year since the 60’s by the Maine Table Tennis Association, and has now been transferred to the Maine Table Tennis League located at the Lewiston Armory.

The Arthur Lekousi Maine table Tennis Championship is scheduled for Nov. 19 at the Lewiston Armory. This is an all day event to eventually determine the winners for various events. Champions get only “bragging rights” until the next state championship. 

The tournament is open to all Maine residents. The format employs a round robin to single elimination. Six various events take place during the day, consisting of a thru d singles competition and also includes an over 40 event as well as a doubles competition. Play will begin at 9:15 a.m. and continue until all events are completed. Trophies will be awarded for all first and second place winners. Cash awards will be given to the winners of the A’s and runner up in the A’s.
