100 years ago, 1916
A big splash in the lake suddenly interrupted a Jolly Halloween party at the Pardon Allen cottage, Lake Auburn, Tuesday night and the awe-stricken guests hurried to rescue Wilfred Cloutier who had lost his bearings and jumped into the lake. Mr. Cloutier was trying to make a quick getaway and not being familiar with the location of the cottage, vaulted the piazza rail and landed in about three feet of water.
50 years ago, 1966
A football rally in Alumni Gymnasium was the “kick-off” for the annual Back-to-Bates Weekend which began Friday night. A near capacity crowd was on hand for the rally which featured William E. Davis of Auburn, a former Bates football player, as the speaker. Coach Bob Hatch spoke briefly and this year’s team was introduced. A group of coeds presented a skit giving their impressions of great moments in sports not usually seen by television cameras. The rally, complete with band and festivities, preceded an open house in the main lounge of Chase Hall.
25 years ago, 1991
The annual Halloween party, sponsored by the East Auburn Community Unit Inc. and the Women’s Auxiliary, is being held tonight at the Community Building. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. and costume judging begins at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded and games and activities will be enjoyed until the party ends at 8:30 p.m. At the Witching Hour of 9 p.m. a dozen names will be drawn and each child on the list will be called by the old witch or warlock. All those that are home will win a prize. If they are not, another name will be drawn.
