NORWAY — The Planning Board voted unanimously Thursday evening to approve a building permit for two high school seniors who want to construct an enclosure for a pizza oven at the Alan Day Community Garden.

Chairman Dennis Gray said the approval is dependent on receiving a permit application from Rocky Crockett, the garden coordinator.

Code Enforcement Officer Joelle Corey-Whitman told Crockett she would present his application to the Planning Board at its November meeting.

Crockett told the board that two Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School seniors want to build “an almost nine- by nine-foot shelter over the pizza oven” for their senior project. He presented a drawing of it.

“I already talked to the fire chief, and he said that (the roof) would be a good idea,” Crockett said. The oven would be locked up after hours, he said.

In other business, the Planning Board approved a building permit for the American Legion Post at 212 Main St. for a 4 by 4-foot deck and an exit door on the back side of the hall.

Corey-Whitman, who spoke on behalf of the Legion, said members came to her about five months ago asking about the deck.

“They’ve moved their meetings from upstairs to downstairs, and because it’s downstairs, they now have to exit the building through the boiler room,” Corey-Whitman said. “There’s nothing that is able to get them to the lower level backyard.”

She said the fire chief wants an exit door, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office agrees.

“The idea is to cut a door into the building and put a landing stoop there so people can exit through the back of the building, rather than going through that boiler room,” Corey-Whitman said.
