NEW GLOUCESTER — A special town meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, asking voters to approve a six-month moratorium on retail marijuana establishments and retail marijuana social clubs.

The meeting will be held at Memorial School, 86 Intervale Road.

The town’s zoning ordinances do not provide an adequate mechanism to regulate and control the location and operation of retail marijuana establishments and clubs. The moratorium would allow officials time to develop an ordinance.

A statewide referendum Nov. 8 asks voters if they want to allow the possession and use of marijuana under state law by persons who are at least 21 years of age, and allow the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, testing, and sale of marijuana and marijuana products subject to state regulation, taxation and local ordinance.
