Born and raised in central Maine, I grew up in a big-hearted Franco-American family. My grandfather’s home actually was in the area that is now the Lewiston High School tennis courts. My father worked in the public school system and my mother was a nurse.

They are both in their 80s now and rely on Social Security and Medicare. That is why I was repulsed to see my opponent, Emily Cain, and her liberal allies completely distort my voting record by saying I voted to harm Social Security and Medicare.

I would never vote to harm those vital programs. I voted to protect Social Security and Medicare for seniors and future generations.

Moreover, I have been leading the charge to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset for Maine teachers, firefighters, police officers and retired public servants. It is absolutely unfair that public servants are being penalized under those programs.

I have supported legislation to repeal those programs and I have aggressively petitioned every member of Congress to join me in repealing those programs. In Congress, I will continue my work to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset.

So, for my opponent and her liberal allies to say I would harm Social Security and Medicare — that is a flat out lie.

Rep. Bruce Poliquin, Oakland
