As a prelude to the ice-fishing season, residents in the lake-laced town of Poland are being invited to a demonstration on the making of fish decoys, Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Ricker Memorial Library. The decoy carver, James Fawcett of Poland Spring, known locally for years for his retirement hobby, carving figures of ducks and such small birds as chickadees and goldfinches, will tell about his recent variation: the making of fish decoys. “I’ll be showing how to carve and color fish models from lightweight cedar wood, so that they hopefully will attract fish looking like the decoys. Targeted especially are rainbow trout and brown trout.” “I weight the decoys with lead,” Fawcett says, “so that they sink under the surface where they can attract hunted fish. I really don’t know yet whether they’ll be effective, but I’ll find out when the ice-fishing season opens on Middle Range Pond.”
