1933 – 2016
AUGUSTA — Gilbert R. Poulin, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 10, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Glenridge, following a short battle with Dementia.
He was born in Augusta, Jan. 6, 1933, a son of the late Joseph A. and Albertine (Giroux) Poulin. Gilbert was a graduate of Cony High School, Class of 1952 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving for 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served two tours in Vietnam and witnessed several atomic bomb tests. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant.
Following his service, he worked for the Veterans’ Administration Medical Regional Office Center at Togus, until his retirement in 1973.
Gilbert, a devout Catholic, was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a member of Le Club Calumet, the Augusta Elks and the American Legion.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting when he could, puzzles and the newspaper first thing in the morning at the kitchen table and was a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts. He loved Chihuahuas and cats.
Gilbert is survived by his son, Patrick G. Poulin and his wife, Rebecca, of Augusta; two brothers: Joseph B. Poulin of Augusta and Joseph A. Poulin Jr. of Lewiston; a sister, Gloria Keobbe of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren: Tabitha Lynn McClay and her husband, Zackary, Derek Cody Jackson and Erika Triggiani and her husband, David; three great-grandchildren: Enzo Triggiani, Lilly Zoe McClay and Layla McClay; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Dona (Jarrett) Poulin; his daughter, Rose-Marie T. Jackson; four brothers, Aimee Poulin, Belmont Poulin, Joseph A.L.P. “Peanut” Poulin and Rudolph G. W. Poulin; and five sisters: Jeanette Bechard, Rita Cooper, Ruth LeVasseur, Sister Bertha Poulin and Rose Marie Lessard.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation at Glenridge, especially Dr. Wang, Vickie and Mary Lou for the exceptional care, kindness and support they showed to Gilbert and the family during his illness.
