1922 – 2016

AUBURN — Norma M. Masse, 94, a resident of the Oddfellows Home in Auburn, died Friday evening, Nov. 11, as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on June 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Norman W. Dunbar and Elsie (Mann) Dunbar. She was educated in various schools in Massachusetts and Maine. She attended Edward Little High School with the Class of 1940 and remained a resident of Auburn, East Auburn and Turner, respectively.

She was a stay-at-home mother for many years, worked a short time at King’s Department Store in Auburn and then at Central Maine General Hospital (now CMMC) in the cafeteria, where she retired after 18 years, in 1987.

She loved to play cards, bingo and was an avid Scrabble player. She was on the CMG bowling team and enjoyed knitting hats and mittens for her children and grandchildren, as well as crocheting dish cloths for everybody. Norma was a kind, gentle and loving person, had a great sense of humor, a beautiful smile and made the best peanut butter fudge in the world.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna L. Clark, and her husband, Peter, of Leeds; her son, Don Haley Sr. and his wife, Kathy, of Danville; nine grandchildren, Bohnny Wiedemann and her husband, Scott, of Lancaster, Ohio, Wanda Chadbourne and her husband, John, of Leeds, Kevin Sturtevant and his wife, Coreen, of Worthington, Ohio, Lori Richardson and her husband, Dennis, of Turner, Craig Sturtevant and his wife, Ashley, of Leeds, Donald Haley Jr. and his wife, Leslie, of Hawaii, Shawna Bear and her husband, Jim, of Poland, Russell Haley and his wife, Lisa, of England and Jonathan Haley and his wife, Vicky, of Florida. She also leaves behind 21 great-grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Nancy L. Walker; two former husbands, Carlton Haley and Leo Pratt; and her last husband, Phillip Masse.
