1935 – 2016

LEWISTON — Edgar W. “Ed” Damon Sr., 81, of Norway died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 14, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 15, 1935, in Island Point, Vt., one of 13 children to Archie and Maud (Suffill) Damon. He attended Vermont schools until the eighth grade when his family moved to West Paris and he later graduated from West Paris High School.

In 1954, he married Beverly Herrick at the Oxford Congregational Church where he worked locally at the Robinson Woolen Mill for a couple of years before enrolling in barber school.

A fixture on Main Street, Norway, for decades, Ed began his barbering career in the corner of a pool hall below Beal’s Hotel. He moved down and across the street to his current location in 1958.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Paris, Norway Paris Fish & Game and South Paris and Norway Snowmobile clubs.

He lived for snowmobiling, and working on his woodlot. Other joys were traveling with his wife and family. He was a fixture at Saturday night dances wherever there was a band playing. Everyone knew he was at the barber shop when his motorcycle was parked out front until he was 80. Best of all was the time spent with family and friends at his camp on McWain Pond and taking everyone out on the “big” boat.

Ed is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Norway; two sons, Edgar W. Damon Jr. and his wife, Louise, of Norway and Duane Damon and his wife, Pamela, of Gorham; four grandchildren, Christopher Damon of Norway, Alan Damon and his wife, Christina, of Gorham, Kelly Caiazzo and her husband, Greg ,of Wellesley, Mass., and Elizabeth Damon and her partner, Nicholas Mathis of Darien, Conn.; six great-grandchildren, Tanisha, Dharma, Will, Andrew, Eleanor, and Fiona; a great-great-grandson, Kayden.
