Daughters of Union Vets meet

PARIS — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, of Stoneham held its monthly meeting on Oct. 27 at the First Baptist Church.

Nominations were made for officers for the 2017 year. Gifts were brought for the Togus Gift Shop. A monetary donation was made to Western Maine Veterans Home.

New officers will be installed at the next meeting on Feb. 23, 2017, at the same location.

Fletcher’s Candy Store to return

NORWAY — The Norway Historical Society will recreate the spirit of Fletcher’s Candy Store Saturday, Nov. 26, the day of the annual Christmas parade.

Fletcher’s Candy Store, known as the Sweetest Spot in Norway, began Nov. 7, 1903, by John H. Fletcher. The store on Main Street was famous for its handmade candy, especially candy canes and ribbon candy at Christmastime, as well as a variety of penny candy.

Handmade peanut brittle, fudge, needhams, truffles and caramel popcorn, as well as candy for children of all ages, will be available to purchase beginning at 9 a.m.

The candy is packaged to make attractive holiday gifts and stocking stuffers.

All proceeds will support the operations of the society.

Star Teachings gathering Nov. 27

FARMINGTON — A community gathering of Star Teachings of TEA dedicated to practicing kindness will take place Sunday, Nov. 27, at 168 Farmington Falls Road.

The gathering is in circle format, where everyone is invited to share their stories, wisdom and questions in the space of openness and receiving.

Fir-tipping, wreath-making workshop

WAYNE — Kennebec Land Trust will hold its annual Sustainable Balsam Fir Tipping and Wreath-Making workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Ladd Recreation Center, 26 Gott Road. 

Dave Fuller, agriculture and non-timber forest products professional with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, will lead a fir-tipping field program on how to tip sustainably, followed by an indoor wreath-making workshop.

He will discuss how to identify balsam fir, proper tipping methods, and how to make a balsam fir wreath.

Pre-registration is required due to a limited class size. The cost to attend will be $5 for KLT members and $10 for nonmembers. Those attending should bring hand shears and light gloves.
