FARMINGTON — Voters on Tuesday passed a six-month moratorium on licensing recreational marijuana businesses and social clubs, giving the town time to write regulations for them.
Over 70 voters attended the meeting.
Resident Robert Sirois asked officials why, if the state is going to take several months to a year to develop their licensing regulations, would Farmington need a 180-day moratorium.
Town attorney Frank Underkuffler said without the moratorium, someone could file an application under the town zoning law and it would be grandfathered.
The moratorium allows the Planning Board to begin a well-thought-out approach to managing future requests, Selectman Stephan Bunker said.
The town looks to set standards on locations for these businesses, setbacks and hours of operation, Town Manager Richard Davis said.
Paul McCarrier of Legalize Maine told voters the organization supports the moratorium but hopes the town will complete it within the 180 days.
