1927 – 2016

AUBURN — Nelson A. Edwards, 89, of Auburn, died late in the afternoon Friday, Nov. 18, at Clover Manor, with family at his side.

He was born in Auburn on Jan. 31, 1927, the son of Frank and Catherine (Crockett) Edwards. Nelson was educated in Lewiston schools and attended Lewiston High School. Mr. Edwards was a military veteran who served his country in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he served a tour of duty aboard the USS Lake Champlain.

On Oct. 25, 1945, he married the former Patricia Gardner of Rangeley. Nelson worked 43 years at the Lewiston Sun Journal, having spent the majority of those years as a pressman in the production department, until his retirement.

He was a longtime member of Court Street United Baptist Church and was the oldest current member at the time of his death.

Mr. Edwards was a loving, devoted and hardworking husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

He leaves behind his wife of 71 years, Patricia Edwards, of Auburn; his son, Gary Edwards and wife, Jeanne, of Sullivan; his daughter, Betsy Bowman of Casper, Wyo.; granddaughter, Rebecca Bowman West and husband, Jonathan, of Casper, Wyo.; and grandson, Mark Edwards, his wife, Grace, of Marshfield, and their sons, Nelson and William.

Mr. Edwards also leaves his sister, Elma Marzilli, of Portland; a brother, Burt Edwards, of South Portland; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Edwards was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Mary Morse; his granddaughter, Jennifer Edwards; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Bowman.
