1943 – 2016
GRAY — Calvin Thomas Cutter passed away on Friday, Nov. 18.
Cal was born in Arlington, Mass., on Nov. 26, 1943, the son of Fred and Agnes Cutter. He was a graduate of Tufts University, Class of 1965. Cal was a self-taught master carpenter, and built his vacation home on Little Sebago by himself in 1973. After a career in engineering and sales, Cal moved to Gray to be near the lake and the outdoors. He immediately became an active citizen in the community, participating in town meetings, scrubbing the town budget and weighing in on many important issues on behalf of Gray residents. He was an avid golfer, and a lifelong Red Sox fan, having held season tickets since 1967. His high school team played a game at Fenway, and Cal was the catcher. A few years ago, he authored “Creed of a Red Sox Loyalist,” which reads “Being a loyal Boston Red Sox fan embodies periods of heartbreak cushioned by lesser periods of exultation; both joined at the hip while driven by spirited faith. It is both cultural and perennial; reflecting hope above despair; acceptance above question. Just ask our parents, our children, their children or a loyal Chicago Cub’s fan; in any order. ‘Careful kid, they’ll break your heart.’”
Cal volunteered weekly at the Hospice House in Auburn, making chocolate cookies for the residents every Friday, and at the Big Brothers Big Sistersof Southern Maine, often bringing children to his workshop to teach them about woodworking.
Cal leaves behind three children, Jeffrey Cutter (Jill) of Falmouth, Mass., Stephanie Cutter of Washington, D.C., and Matthew Cutter (Elise) of Anacortes, Wash.; seven grandchildren, many close and loving friends, including Jane Sturgis, and his dog, Walter, who he adored.
