WINTHROP — The Charles M. Bailey Public Library in downtown Winthrop will host an open house Dec. 3 to celebrate the library’s 100th anniversary.
The morning will feature an hourlong children’s party beginning at 10:30 a.m., hosted by the Winthrop Grade School fourth-graders.
At 12:30 p.m., library trustees and staff will host an all-ages open house event, which will feature brief talks from town officials and a performance by the Winthrop Area Hand Bell Ringers.
On display will be photographs and newspaper clippings from the first 100 years of library service. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day.
The library first opened its doors on Bowdoin Street on Dec. 2, 1916. Charles M. Bailey, who owned one of the largest oilcloth manufacturing businesses in America at the time, donated the rock faced and chiseled granite building. Previously, the library operated as the Winthrop Public Library, which opened in 1889 in the historic downtown Packard Block building. In 1985, the library was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and was expanded in 2015.
All of the day’s programs, which will take place on the first floor in the King event room, are free and open to the public.
