LEWISTON — The YWCA has announced upcoming swimming activities, including a blended-learning American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.

This course allows participants 15 and older to become a certified lifeguard. Participants will spend 10 to 12 hours working at their own pace online, then come in and demonstrate all the skills learned for prevention and rescue of swimmers, including providing first aid and CPR. Prerequisites include completion of a 300-yard swim, treading water and timed deep water object removal. All components are valid for two years.

Class dates are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 29 and 30, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 31. The registration deadline is Saturday, Dec. 10. The cost is $150 for members or $175 for nonmembers.

The YWCA is also accepting signups for the Tiger Sharks Swim Team’s second session, which runs from Jan. 9 to March 9, 2017. Registration must be completed by Dec. 28.

The club is for swimmers ages 6 to 15 interested in a more competitive environment. Swimmers will learn the basic fundamentals of competitive strokes and being part of a team in a positive and encouraging environment. Coaches will focus on stroke development, increasing endurance, nutrition and dry-land conditioning. All swim members will practice at the same time to build team spirit. Swimmers will be placed in lanes with others of the same ability and speed to enhance learning and promote safety.

To qualify, swimmers must be able to swim two continuous laps (50 yards), one freestyle and one backstroke.

The team will participate in USA Swim meets. Travel is required. Cost is $185 per session. USA Swim fee is $67, plus event and swimmer fees. Swimmers must have current YWCA memberships. Payment plans are available.
