LEWISTON — Police said a 33-year-old man was treated at a Lewiston hospital Friday for a gunshot wound in his arm.

Hours after the attack in an apartment at 343 Pine St., police charged 29-year-old Jose Pena of Lewiston with elevated aggravated assault.

Police said the victim was shot in the left arm and the wound is not considered life threatening.

The victim has not been identified.

The man first went to the emergency department at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where police were called at 4:59 a.m. He was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, police said.

According to a written statement from Lt. Mark Cornelio, police received information there was an altercation at the apartment where the victim was shot. Through investigation and with the assistance of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, police said a suspect was identified, found and arrested.

Pena was found at 62½ Jefferson St., police said, and brought to the Lewiston Police station, where he was arrested. Pena was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, where bail was set at $150,000 cash.

Pena has an extensive criminal record in the Lewiston area, including convictions for disorderly conduct, refusal to submit to arrest and driving while intoxicated.
