Gov. Paul LePage and those who opposed referendum Question 2 (Stand up for students) came up short in the Nov. 8 balloting by more than 9,000 votes. Now the losers are saying that those who voted in favor of Question 2 — the winners — were confused, did not understand, did not know what they were voting on. Such comments are very demeaning to the voters of Maine. The losers want to have the Maine Legislature fix Question 2.

Those people who opposed Question 2 ran a large, well-funded campaign on TV, radio, internet (in all forms), newspapers, debates, yard signs and major articles. Comparisons of the two sides were well documented, explaining their positions in detail.

The public was also well informed by those who supported Question 2. The Maine voters were given all of the information and voted yes. The results of the democratic voting process need to completely followed by the Maine Legislature; they do not need to be “fixed” by the losers.

Gov. LePage opposed Question 2, and he needs to be a gracious loser and move on.

The Maine people voted yes on Question 2. They spoke at the ballot box. Their vote needs to be followed.
