Society to meet Dec. 12
WEST PARIS — The West Paris Historical Society had lots of laughs during its meeting on Nov. 21. Eighteen attended, including two guests.
A favorable financial report was announced for the hunters’ and family breakfast and gun raffle, which was won by Sullivan Poland.
The Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at the home of Sandra and Ken Poland. This is the Christmas meeting, and there will be dessert and finger foods. There will be a gift swap with a $5 limit, where women will give gifts to women, and men will give gifts to men.
This will be the last meeting of the year. Meetings will resume in April 2017.

Historical Society to hold Christmas bash
MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society will meet for its annual Christmas celebration at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in the Calvin Lyons Hall.
Special guests will be the Rumford, Dixfield, Peru and Byron historical societies. A potluck supper will be shared followed by a Christmas sing-along with Ginny Palmer.
There will be a silent auction table and a 50/50 raffle to benefit the new roof for the Wills Homestead Museum.
Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the food pantry.
The next meeting will be April 17, 2017, in the Calvin Lyons Hall.
Discontinued, abandoned road talk
FARMINGTON — Attorney, logger and forester Mike Maines will discuss discontinued and abandoned roads at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at the Farmington Town Office, 153 Farmington Falls Road/Route 2.
Discontinued and abandoned roads are a longstanding issue, and there have been numerous attempts to develop solutions by crafting statutes to assist municipalities.
The presentation will be presented by the Upper Kennebec Valley Chapter of the Small Woodland Owner’s Association of Maine. All are welcome to join.
The annual chapter planning meeting will follow the talk. Suggestions for programs in 2017 will be considered. It’s not necessary to to be a member to attend.
Those attending should bring a food item to aid thinking. Weather cancellations will be announced at www.swoam.org.

Essentials of College Planning
WILTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop, Essentials of College Planning, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Wilton CareerCenter, 865 U.S. Route 2 East.
The workshop is for adults 19 and older.

Wreath of Hope for loved ones
RUMFORD — The Hope Association will display the Wreath of Hope, a fundraiser for Special Olympics’ Team Sunshine, through Dec. 31.
For a donation, members of the community can have lights displayed in memory of a person or pet (blue lights), in honor of a military person who is serving or who has served (green lights) or for friendship or love (yellow lights).
