BETHEL — Local artist Melanie Tornberg’s work will be featured at the gallery at Mill Hill Inn from Dec. 16 through the end of March.

There will be a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the gallery. It is free and open to the public. Keyboard player Matthew Draper will play live music. Refreshments will be served.

Tornberg, a Maine native, retired to Bethel two years ago with her husband, Anders, to focus on their love of the great outdoors. Inspired by the beauty of the Bethel area, most of the paintings on display depict scenes recognizable to skiers and hikers familiar with the area.

No stranger to the local art scene, Tornberg spent eight years studying with the Western Maine Art Group, first under the tutelage of Lee Bean in the children’s class and later transitioning into the adult classes taught by WMAG founder Lajos Matolcsy.

She learned the basics of oil and watercolor painting and stayed with the group until graduating from high school. At Matolcsy’s suggestion, Tornberg entered the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of New Hampshire, where she studied with painters John Laurent and John Hatch.

More recently, she was awarded first prize at the 3rd Annual Mahoosuc Land Trust Art Show for her painting “Two Guys Fishing.” She serves as president of WMAG, an honor that she hopes will enable her to contribute to the legacy of her childhood mentors.
