RUMFORD — The Chisholm Ski Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this winter by hosting many different events, including the revival of the Winter Carnival to be held the weekend of Feb. 3-5.

In keeping with the history of the Winter Carnival, there will be a Carnival Queen competition. Candidates will sell Winter Carnival event tickets and conduct other fundraisers of their choice.

The candidate who raises the most money for the Chisholm Ski Club will be crowned Carnival Queen at the Carnival banquet on Feb. 4, 2017, at Black Mountain Lodge. Money raised by the queen candidates will go toward the Chisholm Ski Club’s vision of the Youth Development Ski Program.

The Chisholm Ski Club is looking for three to five candidates between the ages of 18 to 30 to fundraise through Jan. 31, 2017. Each queen candidate must raise a minimum of $500 and will retain 10 percent of her earnings.

The winning queen will be awarded a weekend lodging/dining package for two to the Wentworth Inn, an elegant country inn located in beautiful Jackson, New Hampshire. This package will be good for any season and will include $250 to be used for activities such as skiing, golfing, or shopping in nearby North Conway, New Hampshire.

Sue Adley served as a Carnival Queen in 1988. She was in her early 20s when she was approached about running.

“It was one of the highlights of my life,” she noted.

“The Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain were always a big part of my family,” Adley said.

Adley said she did a lot of fundraising and had fun doing so. Fundraisers she worked on included card games, an auction and bottle drives.

“It was just a good time,” she said. “It was a lot of work, but it was a great atmosphere to be around. Anything to help the mountain and Chisholm Ski Club. They’re really good people.”

Adley said she worked hard for a short period of time but it was important. It’s about being part of the community and giving back, she said.

“Volunteering is kind of in my blood — I still do it,” she said. “I try to teach my children that, too. Get involved in things and keep the community going. You’ve got to have something here.”
