LIVERMORE — A new family Christmas Eve service is one of many events this holiday season at the North Livermore Baptist Church.

Pastor Bonnie Higgins said it’s the first time in a long time there has been a family-oriented service on Dec. 24. It will be held at 6 p.m. and will feature Scripture readings, carols and a brief sermon. The service is open to everyone.

In previous years, the service was held at 11 p.m., too late for young children to attend, she said.

A Christmas Cantata will be part of the morning worship at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 18.

Worship services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day and on New Year’s Day.

Members of the congregation have adorned the sanctuary with greenery, a large Nativity and several other Christmas scenes. Antique lanterns have been placed on the windowsills. Wreaths adorn the windows.

Higgins said members donate weekly and monthly to the Tri-Town Ministerial Food Bank. This month, the focus is on baking ingredients.

“It’s tough when you have young kids and you can’t buy or don’t have the ingredients to make cookies with them,” she said.

Baking staples, sprinkles, extracts and other special ingredients have been donated. One member has created baking kits that include a recipe and all items needed to make it.

“When there’s a need, people in this church step up,” Higgins said. “We adopt a family each year and there have been overwhelming responses to the family picked this year.”

Members are also making hats and mittens to be donated to local schools. Outerwear gets wet during recess and some children don’t have them, Higgins said.

The church also has adult and children’s Sunday School classes at 9 a.m. Sundays, and Bible studies at 6 p.m. Mondays and 1 p.m. Tuesdays.

“We’re all a big family here,” Higgins said. “It’s good to care about each other. The people here are so wonderful and giving.”
