MASON TOWNSHIP — New Ventures Maine announces its mini-marketing grant for November 2016 was awarded to Pleasant River Farms, 166 Smith Farm Road, Mason Township.

Small businesses in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties competed for the award.

The farm specializes in organic, grass-fed beef. It’s currently the only producer of Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association-certified organic beef in Oxford County.

Dean and Deborah Richmond started this family farm 10 years ago with a small herd of cattle.

To help meet its commitment of producing organic beef for its customers, Pleasant River Farms has partnered with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Sunday River Ski Resort and Mount Abram Ski Area to divert their food waste stream to the farm for composting.

The funds from the grant will be used toward elements of Pleasant River Farms’ marketing plan. The goal is to raise brand awareness of Pleasant River Farms and to increase participation and public awareness of the composting program. The marketing campaign includes educational signs and materials for public participation at the composting sites.

A statewide organization serving all 16 Maine counties from 10 centers and outreach sites, New Ventures Maine offers skills development and support in the areas of career planning, entrepreneurship and financial management.

The application for the next round of marketing mini-grant awards will be May 5, 2017.
