AUGUSTA — The results of a Maine referendum on the legalization of marijuana in the state will likely head to the governor’s desk this week.
Maine voters narrowly approved legalization of recreational marijuana in November. A group campaigning against legalization dropped a request for a recount on Saturday.
A spokeswoman for the Maine secretary of state’s office says on Monday the results will most likely be certified this week and then sent to Gov. Paul LePage.
He will have 10 days to issue a proclamation of the results. After that, the law would take effect in 30 days.
LePage, a Republican, has questioned whether legalization of recreational marijuana can be implemented in the state. Maine already had legal medical marijuana.
LePage’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
