CASCO — Police are alleging a Maine man charged in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in the town of Casco had been drinking and doing drugs before the crash.

Jeffrey Smith, of Sebago, appeared in court Wednesday on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

The crash victim was 56-year-old Lorna Nugent of Casco. She was struck Sunday evening. Authorities allege Smith told a woman in the car with him that he thought he hit a deer.

The Portland Press Herald reports that police allege in documents filed Wednesday that Smith had been drinking and using prescription medication Ritalin before he and the woman got into the car.

Smith’s lawyer declined to comment.
