New skating rinks, made necessary by an unusually large number of skating enthusiasts, are being developed in Auburn. Norris Ingersoll, superintendent of the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, said today that a new rink is being developed at Walton Junior High School. The facility reportedly will be larger than the one used in recent years, Ingersoll said. Another skating area which the APRD hopes to open in another day or so, is one off Cleveland Avenue. Work was scheduled to start today on the construction of a third new rink on Woodlawn Avenue, according to Ingersoll.

Nine tons of cardboard. Four tons of newspapers. Ten tons of scrap metal. Thirteen tons of office paper. Seventy tons of wood waste. That’s the tally so far this year for the recycling program at Bates College, where student, faculty and staff enthusiasm has translated into a major reduction in the college’s contribution to the city landfill. Last year the college produced 410 tons of solid waste; through mid-October the 1991 figure was 286 tons. Like the rest of Lewiston, Bates was required, starting in May, to separate certain materials from the waste stream, including paper and cardboard. But recycling efforts actually began about a year earlier, when a group of students initiated their own program.
