Already the Cushman-Hollis Co. is making shoes in the basement of its new Court Street addition in Auburn. Itself larger than some big factories, the roof is on; heat is in; lights are going in; they are hanging shafting on the top floor and yet all the windows are not in, nor would we believe it is so near completion. The whole of the first floor is to be devoted to offices. Here is one of the biggest increases in shoe factory property that Maine has seen in many a day. It is said that the Cushman-Hollis Co. plans to make 25,000 pairs of shoes a day to the end of its spring run.

The public will be asked to comment Jan. 21 on a code amendment that would prohibit discharging firearms within Lewiston city limits. “The police are having an awful time enforcing anything the way the ordinance is written” now, said City Clerk Gerald Berube at a meeting Tuesday of the Ordinance Committee. That committee’s recommendation to the City Council led to the scheduling of the public hearing on the matter. Section 30-2(a) of the Revised Code of Ordinances says that “No person shall fire or discharge any gun, revolver, pistol or firearm of any description whether the same be loaded with powder and ball or shot or loaded with any kind of explosive whatsoever, air rifle or air gun, within the business, residential or built-up portions of the city. The code makes exceptions for such people as law-enforcement personnel and those discharging firearms “in duly authorized rifle ranges, pistol ranges, target range, or shooting galleries.”
