LIVERMORE — An Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputy is investigating a burglary at the Livermore Post Office at 5 Bear Mountain Road, Chief Deputy William Gagne said.
The break-in occurred between Saturday afternoon and early Monday morning, and it appears that more than one suspect is involved, he said.
The post office was entered, and an unsuccessful attempt was made to get into a safe. The burglars did damage inside the building, including using a fire extinguisher, he said.
Nothing appears to have been taken.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service, is involved, Gagne said.
Burglary or robbery of a postal unit is a federal offense that can carry a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious between Saturday afternoon and early Monday at the post office are asked to call lead investigator Sgt. Brian Smith at 207-753-2599.
The North Jay Post Office was also burglarized in April 2016. A beauty salon and the Post Office were connected in the back, but had separate entrances. Access was gained to the building owner’s safe and a small amount of cash was taken.
That burglary also took place between a Saturday and early Monday morning.
No one has been charged in the case.
