CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Artist Katherine Maloney is exhibiting her art at the Carrabassett Valley Public Library and Community Center through February.
There will be a wine and cheese artist reception to meet Maloney and celebrate her art from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10.
Maloney graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in art history with a minor in studio art from Colby College. After graduation, she did exhibit and mural work at the Portland Museum of Art and the Children’s Museum of Maine. She stayed in the Portland area for 20 years, doing graphic design, marketing and painting before moving to the western mountains full time.
In addition to landscapes and seascapes, she started a business painting pet portraits four years ago after the loss of her husband’s beloved Labrador.
“The pet portraits give me so much pleasure to do. Often I am commissioned to paint an animal that is no longer with us; it can be emotional but the joy on the owner’s face is a wonderful reward,” she said.
Last summer she began a new series of oils that explore cloud formations and movement, both on land and on water. Sugarloaf, Flagstaff and the Bigalows are some of her local inspirations, as are memories of fast-moving squalls across the ocean.
In the winters, she can be found at Sugarloaf Childcare. She lives in Wyman with her husband and their border collie mix, Abby.
The lobby is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.
