LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women will host a women’s singing circle from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, which organizers hope will be the first of many singing circles.

A singing circle is not a choir; the songs shared are ones that are repetitive and can be easily taught and learned by heart. The ability to read music is not required. All women or girls 8 years of age and older are welcome, regardless of musical training. The only requirement is a desire to explore and nourish your inner spirit through song and chant.

In the style of Women With Wings in Bangor, which has been meeting weekly for more than 20 years, the focus is on the spiritual empowerment of women. The goal is to create a safe and sacred space to explore and practice women’s spirituality through music. Through shared song, singers can enhance consciousness of Mother Earth, express love for the environment and celebrate traditions from many cultures.

The group will gather and sing at 4 p.m., followed by introductions and more singing for about an hour. There will be a soup meal afterwards and discussion about scheduling and how often to meet going forward.

Those interested may contact Klara Tammany at The Center for Wisdom’s Women at 207-513-3922. No reservations are needed. Potluck contributions to the soup meal are invited. There is no charge to participate, although donations to the women’s center are always appreciated.

The Center for Wisdom’s Women is a day drop-in center for women off Bates Street and between Pine and Ash streets. Parking at the site is limited, but is available on the street or a couple blocks away in the Park Street garage.
