Legion scholarship accepting applications 

RUMFORD — Auxiliary Unit No. 24, American Legion, is seeking applicants for the annual scholarship program.

Scholarship applications for the Class of 2017 can be picked up at the Mountain Valley High School and Dirigo High School guidance offices and at the Post at 184 Congress St.

High school seniors who are children or grandchildren of current Auxiliary members are eligible to submit their application by Feb. 1. Scholarship money is distributed once first semester grades are submitted by the end of January 2018.

Last year’s recipients were graduates of Mountain Valley High School and Radford High School in Hawaii.

Play Museum receives grant

WILTON — Western Maine Play Museum has announced that it is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from the Morton-Kelly Foundation to go toward building renovations.

Publishing workshop at Rumford Library

RUMFORD — The Maine Authors Publishing and Cooperative Boston Writers Publishing and Cooperative will offer a workshop on indie publishing from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Rumford Public Library.

Plate tectonics talk Jan. 19

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — In his talk “Why Is that Mountain There?” Ed Laine will discuss plate tectonics at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in the Begin Family Community Room of the Carrabassett Valley Public Library and Community Center.

Laine is retired from teaching at Bowdoin College, where he was chair of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and director of Environmental Studies. He is an oceanographer and marine geologist and has conducted research in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic oceans. He helps college faculty improve their teaching through service-learning.
