Maine as a Vacationland paid off for Auburn Thursday with the announcement that General Electric Co. will locate a parts fabrication plant in the city. The vacationland aspect results from the fact that a firm employee, knowing his company was seeking quarters for such a plant, has a summer camp at Sebago Lake. During the summer, he heard of two sites being available in Auburn, one of them the Dane-T-Bits Biscuit Company plant the firm will occupy. He passed the information along to his superiors and from there the company took the ball and carried it for an industrial development touchdown for Auburn.

The Lewiston Finance Committee appropriated funds Monday night to continue study of the bacteriological content of Lake Auburn. The content exceeded health standards during an eight-week period last year. The Water and Sewer Department is looking to move the location of an existing pump for the city’s water supply, or to build a new one to work in conjunction with the current pump. But the firm of Camp, Dresser and McKee, which has been conducting the bacteriological study, discovered that from the last two weeks of October until the first or second week in December, bacteria counts in the southwest end of the lake reach levels unacceptable to state and federal health standards for drinking water. Water and Sewer Superintendent Christopher Crovo said the studies seemed to identify the area where the bacteria was coming from, but not the cause.
