Living in Mechanic Falls may feel as good as winning the lottery, for the town is abolishing its property taxes for the first six months of this year. The tax moratorium, which could make Mechanic Falls the envy of many other municipalities, was made public Wednesday during the first of a series of administrative meetings on the 1992 municipal budget. The windfall has its roots more than a dozen years ago, when townspeople set aside taxpayer funds in escrow to cover six-month carryover expenses whenever the town’s fiscal year changed from a calendar year to one beginning July 1. Assurance that Wallace Parochial School of St. Patrick’s parish will reopen this coming fall was given Sunday by Rev. Daniel J. Hagerty, the pastor, who announced that the Sisters of Mercy will staff the school next September. The future of the school has been in question since the announcement was made several weeks ago of the withdrawal of the Sisters of the Congregation de Notre Dame from Lewiston at the end of the school year. Six religious will teach at the school, which already has two lay teachers on its faculty.
