LEWISTON — The School Committee unanimously voted Monday night to add $2,200 in funding for the Unified Basketball team to the annual school budget.
Jason Fuller, Lewiston High School athletic director, said the cost covers coaching, equipment, dues and fees to play in the league.
The Unified Basketball league was previously funded with grant money through the Special Olympics.
“It’s given a home to students who didn’t have a home in this building,” Fuller said.
He hopes to expand the unified sports teams at the high school.
“Lewiston has become a crucial part of this endeavor in the state,” he said.
In other news:
• Linda Scott was voted in again as School Committee chairwoman for 2017. Scott named committee member Benjamin Martin of Ward 4 her co-chairman, in the event that she is absent from a meeting.
• Martin announced that at the Building Committee meeting, the group decided on tile instead of carpet for the flooring in the new elementary school to be located next to the high school on East Avenue.
• Scott announced that she had appointed some members of the new school Naming Committee but is looking for a few more members. “We would like to have citizens on the Naming Committee (who) aren’t necessarily connected to the School Committee or on the Building Committee,” she said. “We’d like to have parents on it.”
She hopes to have the committee filled in the next two weeks. Those interested in joining can email Scott at lscott@lewistonpublicschools.org.
