1954 – 2017

NEW GLOUCESTER — In the late evening on Monday, Jan. 23, in her home surrounded by her loving family, Catherine Joyce (Babick) Zuckerman passed away after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., on May 17, 1954, to the late Gertrude Wristen and Anthony Babicki. She graduated from Andover High School, Class of 1972. Shortly thereafter, she attended auto mechanic school and went to work as an automotive technician for Boston Edison. Later, she learned to operate a tractor-trailer and drove for various companies over the years, most notably UPS.

She went on to attend nursing school at St. Joseph’s College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree in 1984. She worked at Mid Coast Hospital for a time before becoming an occupational health nurse for B & M Beans and later for L.L.Bean. After 18 years in various roles at L.L.Bean, she returned to Mid Coast Hospital until her condition prevented her from continuing nursing. During the course of her illness she volunteered many hours at Maine Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit rocking babies, something that provided her great joy.

Those who were fortunate enough to know her, knew her to be a selfless and strong-willed woman with an infectious smile and beautiful soul that touched the hearts of so many people. She always had a positive outlook on life and believed in the generous and honest spirits in people. She especially loved children and animals; her relationships with them could only be described as magical. She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Lawrence Zuckerman; her son, Tyler Beran; and her daughter, Leah Beran; her sisters, Maureen Babicki and Annmarie Babicki; and brother, Brian Babicki and his partner, Lynn Foley; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to whom she gives love and thanks for being a part of her life.
