AUBURN — Mary Wood Greaton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Mary was the youngest daughter of John Camp and Sylvie Parker Wood, born Sept. 23, 1928, at Quaker Ridge, North Leeds. She graduated from Patten Grammar School in Greene, then Lewiston High School in 1946.

Mary attended Auburn Maine School of Commerce while employed at the Manufacturers National Bank, 1946-1952. In 1948, she and her sister, Ruth, purchased the home place of Oak Ridge in Greene.

Mary and Winston Spencer Greaton were married June 4, 1952, and moved to Portland, where she was employed at the First National Bank of Portland until 1956. The family moved to North Reading, Mass., in 1965 and she was employed as communications records supervisor at American Mutual Insurance Co.

She and Winston moved to Millinocket in 1979, where she worked at Baxter State Park Headquarters from 1985-1987 — a highlight was a midwinter ride to Chimney Pond on the back of the director’s snowmobile. After Winston’s retirement in 1986, they settled in Lewiston.

She and her husband were blessed with three sons, two surviving. Mary enjoyed music, gardening, reading and refinishing furniture. Mary was always active in church and communities: in Greene, she was a Sunday school teacher and organist; in Portland, she was involved in United Way and Avon, was a World Book Encyclopedia rep and also was a Sunday school teacher at Central Square Baptist Church; in North Reading, she was a Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, choir member and moderator at the First Baptist Church; and Millinocket was another adventure finding her again in the choir, teaching Sunday school and DVBS, and serving as deaconess.

She became a member of the Gideons International in 1976 and served in several capacities in Massachusetts and Maine. Mary was appointed as an International Auxiliary Cabinet Representative 1988-1991 and traveled to eight states. She served the Christian Women’s Club in Massachusetts and Maine. She was a past president of the Woman’s Literary Union, a member of YAH Fellowship and a member of Court Street Baptist Church where she served on the diaconate, Missions Board and Music Committee.

She is survived by husband, Winston (Auburn); sons, Everett and Kathy Bannerman (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Robert, Jana and their daughter, Hannah (Seattle, Wash.); James’ widow, Cindy (Portland) and their son, Nat (Marlboro, Mass.), daughter, Rachel (South Portland) and Matt Patterson and their son, Hazen, and daughter, Cadence; and Mary’s nephews, John and Lindy Wood (Turner), Alan and Sheila Wood (Greene), and Mark and Judith Wood (Poland).

She was predeceased by parents; son, James; sister, Carolyn Wood; brother, Gilbert Wood; and sister, Ruth Wood.
