RUMFORD — A fire severely damaged a home at 399 Swain Road in Rumford early Saturday morning, killing two pet cats.

All four residents were able to get out of the home safely.

The fire was reported to the Rumford Fire department at 1:06 a.m., Fire Chief Bob Chase said.

When emergency officials arrived at the scene, the one-story ranch style home had “heavy fire involvement.”

The fire was knocked down by about 3 a.m., Chase said.

The home’s roof partially collapsed, and all the contents on the first floor sustained fire and smoke damage, but items in the basement might be salvageable, he said. At this time, Chase said the home is still “structurally standing.”

It is unknown at this time whether the home was insured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
