President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is “creating confusion and concerns” for L.L.Bean employees, according to an internal memo obtained by Politico.

The Feb. 2 memo from the Freeport retailer’s chief executive officer, Stephen Smith, said the privately held company is “committed to help our affected employees in any way possible.”

The memo sent to employees told them to reach out to him if they were “personally grappling” with any issues created by the order, which is now on hold following a court order.

The memo also referred to the controversy that swirled around the company recently when support for Trump by one of its directors landed the company on a national boycott list created by critics of the president.

“We have gone to great pains over the past few weeks to distance ourselves from an unfortunate and unwanted political situation,” Smith mentioned in his memo.

The boycott became a big national story after Trump tweeted his support for L.L.Bean, spurring many longtime customers to stop shopping there and some of the president’s fans to make new orders.

In the memo obtained by Politico, Smith said L.L.Bean supports “diversity to create a stronger organization and a better world” and that the company believes in “an inclusive, welcoming work environment.”

Many companies have taken public stands against the president’s new immigration stance. Smith’s memo was aimed solely at offering a helping hand to the company’s workers.

L.L.Bean did not respond immediately to phone and email inquiries.
