Several inches of snow accumulated in Lewiston by 9 a.m.

LEWISTON — Commuters  struggled with the snow Tuesday morning. Accidents were reported on southern section of the Maine Turnpike, and a tractor-trailer jackknifed in Wilton.

Area schools — including Lewiston and Auburn — canceled classes for Tuesday.

Auburn and Lewiston have parking bans starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Lewiston’s parking ban will end at 7 a.m. Wednesday, while Auburn’s will last until noon.

Meteorologist Andy Pohl of the National Weather Service said to expect the snow to turn to ice by the end of the night.

“It’ll start with snow in the late morning and increase through the afternoon and the evening,” he said. “It will probably be late evening before we see ice pellets and freezing rain.”
