NEWRY — The Sunday River Golf Club is now owned by Newry Holdings LLC of Portland and back taxes owed to Newry have been paid, according to town officials.

Newry Holdings is affiliated with the Black Swan Country Club of Georgetown, Massachusetts, along with two other courses, according to Peter Brown, director of operations for Black Swan.

The Sunday River course was previously a Harris Golf property. The Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course was built in the early 2000s. Newry officials have reported for years that the course was regularly late in paying property taxes.

According to Newry Deputy Clerk Kelly Scott, records show that on Jan. 5, SR Golf Holdings LLC (Harris Golf) deeded the golf course to the holding company Boothbay Pool LLC in lieu of foreclosure. Boothbay Pool LLC then sold the property to Newry Holdings LLC, she said, with the transfer tax indicating an amount of $2 million.

Newry Holdings has paid three years of back real estate taxes amounting to $142,411, Scott said.

Brown said his company is “trying to get a handle on everything up at the golf course. We’re in the beginning stages. We’ve been talking to the staff that was there, and we’re putting together a team. We’re very excited. We’d like to get it back up to the No. 1 rated in the state, so that everyone will want to come up to see it and play it. We’re very impressed with the quality and the beauty of the course.”

He said his company has been talking with people in the community and Boyne Resorts, which manages Sunday River Resort. “We want to be a good corporate citizen,” Brown said.

Selectmen were scheduled to meet with Brown about assigning the liquor license for the golf club.

The 18-hole course is off Monkey Brook Road and next to Sunday River Resort property, near the Jordan Grand Hotel.
