AUGUSTA (AP) — Nursing Leaders of Maine, the American Nursing Association of Maine and the Maine Nursing Action Coalition say the state is going to face a shortage of about 3,200 registered nurses by 2025.

The organizations announced the results of the 2016 Maine Nursing Forecaster on Tuesday at the Statehouse.

The groups say nursing is reaching an employment cliff. The median age of Maine nurses was 49 in 2015 — but about 30 percent of registered nurses are 55 and older.

Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew was on hand for the announcement. Maine’s public universities will be working with the administration to host a Maine Nursing Summit to address the issue.
