AUGUSTA — Mike Gilman scored 18 points and Nick Curtis added 16 points to lead No. 6 Windham to a 51-47 upset victory over No. 3 Deering in the Class AA North boys’ basketball quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center Thursday night.
The Eagles (13-6) advance to face No. 2 Edward Little in the semifinals next Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Rams end their season at 12-7.
Windham handed EL its only loss of the season, 60-58, on Jan. 24 in the teams’ only meeting.
Jean Claude Butera led Deering with 12 points, while Raffaele Salamone added nine points.
Salamone missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it in the final seconds. Butera grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled, sending him to the line with 2.1 seconds to go.
He made the first, then missed the second deliberately off the back of the rim in order to give the Rams a chance at a game-tying shot. The ball went out of bounds off the Rams, and Gilman hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining to clinch it for the Eagles.
