In 1994, I was 23 years old, living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and working a job that didn’t offer health insurance for its employees. I was in a relationship (with the man I eventually married), and having children at that time was not an option. Because of my low income while I put myself through college, Planned Parenthood was the best, and only, option for me for birth control and preventative health care.

One year, during my regular annual women’s health exam, a test came back positive for precancerous cells. I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and was referred to an oncologist for treatment. Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood was unable to perform the procedure that I eventually had to have, but it helped me find an oncologist who worked with me financially and allowed me to make payments for the treatment.

Through the years, I continued to use Planned Parenthood for my preventative health. I strongly believe that without Planned Parenthood, my precancerous situation would have evolved to cervical cancer.

I am forever grateful that Planned Parenthood was there for me, and that I could choose Planned Parenthood for my preventative health care.

I am sure my story is not a unique one. I am sure there are thousands and thousands of women who have similar stories. That is why Planned Parenthood is vital. And that is why I stand with Planned Parenthood.
