(Editorial) While we are not overwhelmingly convinced the City of Auburn needs a new city charter, we by no means consider the proposed new charter measure for Auburn an unsatisfactory bill. We think the city would carry on its affairs as well under the new charter as under the existing one, but whether the former would really bring about greatly noticeable improvement in the administration of municipal affairs is open to question. There is a question in our mind as to whether the proposed four-year term for city councilmen represents an advantage over the existing two-year setup. Four years is excellent in those instances where an outstanding individual is elected to the council, but this time span can go against the grain if an elected councilman turns out to be something less than a success as a member of the city’s top administrative body.

A local man who plans to start a semipro football team here will go before the Lewiston City Council Tuesday to get access to the Lewiston Athletic Park football field. Vincent Singleton, a painting contractor who coached the semipro Maine Lions, which is based in Old Orchard Beach, thinks there’s room enough for two Eastern Football League teams in Maine. “I felt support was very good here in Lewiston-Auburn,” Singleton said. “It’s an opportunity to establish a team here so the fans could see a good semipro team.” The league has teams in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, he said.
