Winds picked up strength Thursday — enough to knock down power lines in southern and Western Maine.

As of 1:19 p.m., Central Maine Power reported at least 10,000 power outages in the state. The most — 6,800 power outages — were reported in York County and at least 1,500 reported in Oxford County.

The National Weather Service says the wind gusted to 53 mph in Guilford and 52 mph in Meredith, New Hampshire, and 50 mph in Portland.

Tom Hawley from the National Weather Service says there could be another shot of wind on Saturday, accompanied by colder temperatures. He says the Saturday gusts could produce wind chills of 0 to 20 below on the coast and 10 to 20 below in the mountains.
