MEXICO — By narrow margins, voters have passed a 180-day moratorium ordinance on retail marijuana establishments, stores and clubs, a medical marijuana dispensary and medical marijuana cultivation facilities ordinance.
Town Clerk Penny Duguay said the moratorium ordinance passed, 32-28. The medical marijuana ordinance passed 33-27. The votes were held Feb. 28.
The moratorium ordinance was initiated by Police Chief Roy Hodsdon.
On Nov. 8, Maine voters narrowly approved legalizing recreational use of marijuana, allowing municipalities to regulate the location and operation of retail marijuana establishments and social clubs and to adopt and enforce regulations for such uses.
The moratorium ordinance would give the town time to draft regulations governing such establishments and clubs, because the town Zoning Ordinance has no provisions or standards for them.
Voters also approved Clifford Stewart to fill a seat on the Board of Selectmen. He was the lone candidate.
The position was vacated by Jack Gaudet when he was named town manager Nov. 28, 2016. The term expires in June.
