The letter from Michael Lachance (March 5) about winter recreation on Lake Auburn has prompted me to offer the following information.

I have been a member of the Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission for more than 20 years and can state emphatically that the mission of the Commission is the same as it was then: to protect the watershed and the water quality of Lake Auburn.

I would encourage interested individuals to visit the Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission’s website for information on using watershed lands. The Commission has approved trails for a variety of multi-seasonal recreational uses. The one caveat is that one should do no harm to watershed lands.

One needs to remember that beautiful Lake Auburn is the primary drinking water supply for the cities of Auburn and Lewiston. It is in the best interest of everyone that Lake Auburn retain its waiver from filtration from the state of Maine and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That waiver, as noted in the 2010 Lake Auburn Watershed Plan, has resulted in savings of millions of dollars in treatment and operating costs.
